What is God's Heart for Your City? Day 8

What is God’s Heart for Business in our City?

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Gen. 1:15)

Are you in Full Time Ministry? What words would you use to describe work? What words would you use to describe worship? Work is the first “Commandment” given to man and was established by God before the fall.  Our assignment to work was given before sin entered the equation. Adam was not awaiting a call to ministry while he worked the garden, he had already been given one.

Solomon understood,“That every person find pleasure in his work — this is a gift of God.” (Eccl. 3:13) God expected us to enjoy our work! When we ignore being talented, for work in ANY vocation, we may be in danger of rejecting a gift given us by God… for his purposes. While many of us are waiting for our ministry to begin, we can miss the clear evidence that we are already in it.

The Hebrew word used is "abad" and is often translated as work or till –  such as farm-work. Abad is found 254 times in Scripture. In the Psalms it is translated serve (Psalms 2:11) and worship (Psalms 100:2). In Proverbs 12:11 and 28:19, it is translated work. This same Hebrew word, used to describe work, service and worship indicates a departing from our typical secular and sacred categories. Physical work is valuable to God. It is a way that we serve and worship Him. Since the word minister means “to serve,” work in the physical world is then a way to minister.

Perhaps we should not think of work as disconnected from ministry. Our work in the physical world is valid and valued as vocational calling. Whatever work you are called to do is your ministry and is a way that you serve and worship the Lord. We are all in full-time-ministry!

The Bible calls us to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem they shall prosper...” (Psalms 122:6) As we lift our city in prayer, we acknowledge that God has equipped all people with gifts, and our implementation of those gifts lands in the form of our work. In this way everyone has the opportunity to participate with God on a daily basis. Join us in lifting this work up in prayer:

Lord we ask that those working in our city would:

  • Be God fearing and recognize that they are accountable to you for each decision and act. (Proverbs 9:10)

  • Be honest in financial, tax and ethical matters (1 Timothy 6:10, 1 Timothy 6:6-10)

  • Be granted wisdom, knowledge and understanding to lead the citizens. (James 1:5)

  • Be generous and have compassionate hearts for the poor and needy. (1 Kings 10:33-37)

  • Recognize their own inadequacies, and humbly pray and seek the will of God. (Proverbs 3:5-8)

  • Have courage to resist manipulation, pressure, and the fear of man. (Proverbs 29:25)

  • Read the Bible and attend prayer meetings and Bible studies. (Psalms 199:11. Colossians 3:2)

  • Be given godly counsel and God-fearing advisers. (Proverbs 24:6)
