National Day of Prayer
We are excited to have Patrick Walton from International House of Prayer, as a guest writer for our blog today, on the importance and need for National Day of Prayer. If you'd like to attend an NPD in your area- we've listed a few options below! The National Day of Prayer is May 3rd, 2017
Our nation is in a place it has never been before. As a younger leader, I cannot speak to the entire history of our nation, but in my lifetime, it is changing rapidly, and that which was stable growing up is now very unstable. This change isn’t necessarily all bad; it is just different and accelerating, and I think it is important to take note of the swiftness with which it is changing.
However, through the Bible, this type of radical change is nothing new. The prophet Joel asks a probing question in Joel 1:2-3 saying, “Hear this you elders, and give ear, all you inhabitants of the land! Has anything like this happened in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? Tell your children about it, let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.” The two-fold question and direction from Joel comes to a people who have seen their land devastated. The answer to the question is a clear no, and the direction he gives is to remember this season, so future will not let it happen again.
In cases of addressing national trouble, or working with a people heading in potentially destructive ways, God’s remedy is always the same: gather together in prayer. The Lord speaks through Joel in Joel 2:12-13,15-16, saying, “…Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping…rend your heart and not your garment; return to the Lord your God, because He is gracious…Consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly; gather the people…gather the children and nursing babies; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, and the bride from her dressing room…”
God’s invitation to us through the National Day of Prayer is to stop business as usual, gather all the people, including the children, and appeal to His gracious heart. Joel rightly speaks again of God’s heart which was revealed to Moses and Jonah. His heart longs to change things in favor of His people and the land, but the prerequisite for that change is for people to come before Him with pure and contrite hearts and ask Him to relent.
We can have confidence when we come before Him with sincerity, He hears us and moves at the sound of our voice. The primary way we can see unity in God’s family across our nation on this National Day of Prayer is to gather together before Him.
