Going Global with Alpha
On May 1st, 26 leaders from several Seattle churches participating in the Alpha Course travelled to London to attend an Alpha Global Leadership Conference. When they arrived they joined 6,000 other Alpha leaders from all over the world for three days of worship, inspiring messages and workshops at the Royal Albert Hall.
Alpha is a 10-week practical introduction to the Christian Faith which originated at the Holy Trinity Brompton Church in Central London. Since its inception, over 29 million people have attended Alpha resulting in millions of people coming to faith in Christ. In addition to running in churches world-wide, The Alpha Course is also taught in prisons, workplaces, for students and the military. The course consists of a shared meal, a brief message and a conversation where all questions are welcomed no matter how simple or hostile. Among the Seattle delegates were 6 leaders who are running the Alpha Course at Hope Place, a recovery ministry for women and children. They have discovered that Alpha is not only a great way to introduce people to a relationship with Christ, but also helps them grow in their faith and recovery.
The team was lead by Christian Downs, the Alpha Washington Director. Christian had an opportunity to share his story on Sunday at Holy Trinity Brompton Church. Christian first came to Alpha while he was in the men’s program at Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, recovering from a heroin addiction. Some volunteers from Westminster Chapel invited men from the program to attend Alpha. Christian decided to attend and through the course came to a renewed faith in Jesus Christ. After finishing the course he was invited to help on the next course and eventually served an internship at Westminster Chapel helping to lead Alpha. Two years later Christian was hired to be the Washington Alpha Director helping churches to start Alpha Courses.
