Advent - Review: Light

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” C.S. Lewis

I think every child goes through the stage of being afraid of the dark. I’m reminded of this when my grandchildren come to stay at our house. Darkness not only obscures, but it also distorts. In the darkness we can’t see things for what they are. Normal, everyday objects become monsters and unknown objects of fear. However, a simple night light works because it shows things for what they really are.

One of the most powerful images of advent is light. John tells us that when the Word came to us in the form of a child, He brought with him light. Light so powerful that is shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it. Before this light arrived, people lived in the shadows and the truth plainly seen in light, was obscured and distorted. He illuminated the truth that can only be perceived in the light of His life. He is the ultimate night light and by His light we can see everything else. By His light we are able to perceive the glory of God’s presence. That presence always existed but was waiting for Jesus, the light source, to reflect God’s glory to mankind.

When Jesus left this world, the light did not go out, but lives in the heart of every believer indwelled by the presence of Christ through His Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 4:6 says, “For God who said, “Let light shine out of the darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

Every believer has the capacity to be a night light in the darkness as our lives reflect the glory of God’s presence. This year when you see the all of lights of Christmas remind yourself that Jesus is the light that allows us to see everything for what it is and the glory of God reflected in the face of Jesus. Oh that this glory would be reflected in our hearts and faces as well.
