It is for Freedom!
Happy 4th of July from all of us at Light Up the City! This morning on my run I started thinking about what this holiday represents to Americans- freedom. Freedom is something that is cherished in our country from its founding roots of 241 years ago. While the founders of this "grand experiment" were far from infallible, they had an idea that struck a cord that is found deep within the human heart. But what is freedom? We are not necessarily free from many things in this country. In recent times, we have witnessed a hyper-politicized nation that sometimes expresses its freedom of speech in putting people down because of their race, political alignment, religion.
However, for us who believe in Christ as the ultimate freedom fighter- it is the promise of his work on the Cross that gives us freedom from our selves and from sin, allowing us to love God and others well. I forget the freedom in Christ every day and it is evident when I get upset with my kids, lose my patience driving, and put off helping my friends and neighbors. But God's grace flows new every day and we, the Church, are to pick each other up as the Kingdom of Freedom advances, by God's will. We hope this small reflection of freedom is encouraging to you on this holiday.
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:1, 5:13-14
