REPORT: School Serve Weekend
What a weekend! This past weekend (August 20th-21st) nearly one thousand volunteers from congregations all over Seattle came out to serve schools in the Seattle School District alone. On top of that- six other districts were also served by churches including: Northshore, Highline, Tukwila, Shoreline, Lake Washington, and Renton districts. In addition, this next weekend Jubilee REACH will be coordinating the serve day for the Bellevue School District.
We had the pleasure of touring five of the schools in Seattle with Superintendent Dr. Larry Nyland. He didn't just shake hands and smile for photo ops- he got the gloves on and spread mulch and hauled away yard waste. Dr. Nyland also gave a brief, but heart-felt talk to a rally of volunteers at a pre-gathering to thank and encourage them for their efforts.
In West Seattle four schools (Madison, Highland Park, Sanislo and Roxhill) were served by seven congregations. Volunteers painted murals on playgrounds and walls, dug out a gravel path and built planter boxes, weeded, mulched and pruned to beautify the schools on the outside.
We will be providing more updates from around the different districts as they come in. Thanks to all who contributed their time, effort and talents. Be sure to listen to our LUTC Radio program this Sunday at 11:30am on 820AM KGNW, where we talk to Buzz Huget of West Seattle CityServe, who helped coordinate the efforts in serving West Seattle Schools.
