CHWS Prayer & Commissioning Service
Pastor Carey Anderson of First AME church in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood realized First AME had something to offer to people experiencing homelessness on Capitol Hill. The congregation also felt equipped to serve people in need; they could cook meals, collect toiletries, and welcome people to attend services and bible studies at their church. In seeking to serve their community, First AME reached out to Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, Grace Seattle Church, and Seattle U to see if they could work together to do something about the current crisis our city is facing.
With a spirit of love First AME has partnered with Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission to open the Capitol Hill Women’s Shelter (CHWS). This overnight shelter will serve women experiencing homelessness seven nights a week opening on August 8th. We are so grateful to partner with First AME, and have volunteers from Grace Seattle Church available to serve at the CHWS.
We would like to invite you to our prayer and commissioning service at First AME Church on Monday, August 8th at 5pm. Please join us in person or in spirit by praying for the church- thanking them for their hospitality and the work they have put in to making this possible; for the guests we will serve-that they will feel deeply cared for; and for the staff working- that they will be well equipped to help the women at the CHWS as they journey out of homelessness.
We hope to serve our first guests in this shelter starting the evening of August 8th. If you know a woman in need in the downtown area, please feel free to refer them by offering them this phone number 206-743-6191.
To volunteer, please visit the Mission website and select Capitol Hill Women’s Shelter.
