The book of Matthew ends with Jesus sharing a vision for his disciples. It was the same vision he had when he asked them if they wanted to become, “Fishers of men.” He charged them, as they go along, to make, “Disciples… baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Spirit… teach them to obey my commands.” (Mt. 28:19-20)
A disciple is a learner. It is not a point of arrival, but one cannot become a disciple of Jesus if they never hear of him! Paul says, “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?” (Romans 10:14)
The book of Acts begins with Jesus telling his disciples to wait. “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit… But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.” (Acts 1:4, 8)
Jesus does not want his followers to go and make disciples until they are empowered, by the Holy Spirit, to “Be (his) witness.” The Holy Spirit equips the believer to bear witness to the good news about Jesus. His life, death, and resurrection. His revealing of the loving heart of the Father. His destruction of the power of sin, his conquering of death, and even his sending of the Holy Spirit to empower and lead us. We are to bear witness to this story!
Light up the City has a goal to see A healthy church network in every city. We hope that each city receives a witness to the good news of the Gospel. There are as many ways that this happens as there are people who are disciples of Jesus. The local worshipping community also displays the embodiment of this gospel… what does it look like to follow Jesus? Come and see!
In an effort to encourage the local church, Light up the City, Saturate the Sound, and the Luis Palau Association (LPA) are teaming up to asses areas in our city where we see this work of “bearing witness” happening in our city. We would love your help in hearing about all the ways you are aware of where there are intentional efforts to proclaim the good news.
Would you join us in collecting this information? Below is a link to an 8 minute survey that will help us to understand the landscape of evangelism here in Seattle. The LPA is also working with partners in a number of other cities.
