Advent - Review: Light

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” C.S. Lewis I think every child goes through the stage of being afraid of the dark. I’m reminded of this when my grandchildren come to stay at our house. Darkness not only obscures, but it also distorts. In the darkness we can’t see things for what they are. Normal, everyday objects become monsters and unknown objects of fear. However, a simple night light works because it shows things for what they really are. One of the most powerful images of advent is light. John tells us that when the Word came to us in the form of a child, He brought with him light.

Advent - Week 4: Love

John 15:9-17 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I cho

Advent - Week 3: Joy

Happiness is a feeling, one that can disappear as soon as it comes. Joy, however, is a choice. We have a choice. God gives us a joy that is rooted in Him and is unconquerable. We can choose to live in the attitude of anger, resentment, and fear, or we can choose to hold to and pursue the joy that God promises us. The third Sunday in Advent shifts from a tone of expectation of Christ’s coming to one of rejoicing at the arrival of God’s Kingdom with the coming of Jesus. The Advent season is now half over, and Jesus’ coming—both his first coming, liturgically, and his second coming, historically—is nearer now than it was two weeks ago. So as we continue in our day to day lives during this Adven

Advent - Week 2: Hope

“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, And in his word I put my hope I wait for the Lord More than watchmen wait for the morning, More than watchmen wait for the morning. Israel, put your hope in the Lord, For with the Lord is unfailing love And with him is full redemption… I pray to God – my life a prayer- And wait for what he’ll say and do.” -Psalm 130 It feels like we’re in an especially great time of waiting to see what God will do… Like the watchmen waiting for the morning, I often feel like I’m sitting in the darkness, unsure of what the future will hold, personally and as a country. Almost every day there is news of mass gun violence, irreversible climate change, racial prejudice
